Refugees easing Covid-19 skills shortages: lessons for the future

Despite recognised as among the most vulnerable to the coronavirus, refugees across the EU and beyond are stepping up to support local communities in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. Their contribution is a reminder that – vulnerable or not – refugees have skills that may be of added value to the local labour market of the countries of asylum, particularly those challenged with skill shortages.

Euro area unemployment at 7.4%, EU27 at 6.6% (March 2020)

In March, a month marked by a wide introduction of containment measures due to COVID-19, unemployment rates both in the euro area and the EU spiked compared to February (7.4%, up from 7.3% and 6.6%, up from 6.5%, accordingly).

World Travel & Tourism Council warns about the coronavirus impact to tourism sector

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the coronavirus threatens the existence of up to 75 million jobs of Travel & Tourism, translated to sector losses of up to US$2.1 trillion in 2020. 6.4 million of these jobs are located within the EU.
